The Japanese Doll Festival “Hina-matsuri”

On 3rd March 2010, “Hina-matsuri”, the Japanese Doll Festival, was held at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan, H. E. Seiji Morimoto. A set of dolls representing the Emperor, Empress and others in traditional court dress of the Heian period was displayed on the platforms covered with a red sheet. Female residents of Oman, mainly from the American Women’s Group, were invited to the event in which the Japanese traditional culture was introduced.

All guests listened eagerly to detailed explanation of the each doll and their origin as well as history of this custom in Japan. Several questions were raised by the guests about the types and colors of dress, the practice of today and so on.

After a light meal, Mrs. Yoshiko Morimoto, wife of the Ambassador, demonstrated the traditional tea ceremony in Japan and served green tea to guests. While the word “green tea” is well known these days, not many people know how to prepare and enjoy a cup of tea in traditional tea ceremony, and all guests paid keen attention to the demonstration of the tea ceremony.

Moreover, peach blossoms displayed next to the dolls enhanced the traditional atmosphere. It was a good opportunity for the guests to touch and feel the beauty and elegance of the Japanese tradition.
