Sympathy and Support for Japan in the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku Pacific Ocean Earthquake

 

 Since the great Tohoku Pacific Ocean Earthquake hit Japan on 11th March 2011, the Embassy has received with sincere appreciation a great number of messages of sympathy and gestures of support from the people and the residents of Oman. Some of which are listed below. (As of 6th April 2011)

 

Charity Bazaar for Japans Tsunami & Earthquake Victims” initiated by the Ladies Association of the Embassy of Malaysia

 The Ladies Association of the Embassy of Malaysia took an initiative to organize a Charity Bazaar for Japans Tsunami & Earthquake Victims on 6th April at the residence of the Malaysian DCM together with the LadiesAssociations of Brunei Darussalam, Thailand and Republic of Indonesia. The ladies brought there their own special cuisines, handicrafts and products from their individual countries, and the revenue of the bazaar was donated to the special account of Friend of Japan.

Charity Event at British School - Muscat

 The parents of several Japanese students at the British School - Muscat held a sale of Origami handicraft on 6th April and donated its revenue to the special account "Friends of Japan"

SMS by Omantel to disseminate donation account details

 In support of the fundraising initiative for the victims of the catastrophic events in Japan , Omantel voluntarily disseminated the details of the bank account that had been specially established for donations for Japan using its SMS services.  The leading mobile phone operator in Oman sent out the bank account information to 60,000 SMS service subscribers for two days on 4th and 5th April to call for their cooperation.

Art Exhibition at American British Academy (ABA)

 Mothers of Japanese students at ABA together with other Japanese ladies in the local community participated in the Art Exhibition held at the school on 30th March. While several origami art works such as senbazuru were on display, a number of other items went on sale. All proceeds of the sales have been transferred into the special bank account as donations for the affected people in Japan .   

    

A message card from Food & Beverages and Housekeeping staff at Al-Bustan Palace Hotel

 A group of representatives from the Departments of Food & Beverages and Housekeeping, Al-Bustan Palace Hotel, presented a message card filled with words of support written by their colleagues along with donations at the Charity Bruch held on 27th March.

1000 cranes from ladies of Japanese Society in Oman

 A group of female members of Japanese Society in Oman presented a ‘senbazuru’, a bunch of one thousand origami cranes held together on strings, at the Charity Brunch held on 27th March. The senbazuru was hung in the hall for display.      

Origami cranes from the students of American British Academy (ABA)

 A craft work featuring origami cranes was received from the students of ABA. The students’work, which has a large message strip that is filled with words of support hung in the center, was on display at the Charity Brunch held on 27th March.  

    

Charity Brunch hosted by Mrs. Yoshiko Morimoto, wife of the Ambassador of Japan

 Mrs. Yoshiko Morimoto, wife of the Ambassador of Japan, held a Charity Brunch on 27th March from 11am to 4pm at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan to raise funds for the victims and sufferers of the great earthquake and tsunamis. The event was attended by prominent ladies of local communities over a buffet which consists of a variety of international cuisines contributed by the wives of ambassadors of 26 other countries and an international organization. The total amount of the valuable donations which more than 150 attendants kindly brought to the event was transferred to the special bank account "Friends of Japan". 

      

Origami cranes from the family of an ABA student

 An assortment of origami cranes was received from a family of one of the students at American British Academy (ABA) on 26th March along with the receipt of donation payment issued by a local bank. The parent of the students works for a private company in Muscat . 

Charity event for fund raising at American British Academy (ABA)

 A group of volunteers, mostly the parents of Japanese students studying at ABA, held a charity sale on 23rd and 24th March at the school. The event sold 185 boxes of homemade norimaki (sushi rolls) to raise funds for the people in Japan affected by the earthquake. An origami crane was given away for each sale of norimaki.        

Students’ presentation at United Private School (UPIS)

 UPIS organized a presentation of poems and messages written by students for the victims and sufferers of the earthquake in Japan. The presentation held on 23rd March was attended by H.E. Seiji Morimoto, Ambassador of Japan. The students read their poems and condolence messages for the Ambassador. Donations were handed over to the Ambassador from the representative of the school. During his visit to the school the Ambassador dropped in "the Math Genius" class, where students were learning the mathematics by using abacus. The abacus seemed to be a good symbol between the school and Japan as it was explained to the Ambassador that the school have dispatched teachers and students in the past to learn the Japanese education system.  

    

Donation by the Korean Community in Oman

 H.E. Seiji Morimoto, Ambassador of Japan, received H.E. Jonghyun Choe, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, and Mr. J.B. Kim, President of the Korean community in Oman in his office on 21st March. The guests handed over to the Ambassador the valuable donation raised among the Korean people. The Korean community in Oman consisting of about 400 is as four times larger as the Japanese one. The donation campaign was conducted widely within the community as a proof of friendship between the two countries, according to President Kim.    

    

1000 crane project at The Sultan’s School

 H.E. and Mrs. Seiji Morimoto, Ambassador of Japan, were invited to The Sultan’s School on 19th March to receive a ‘senbazuru’ at a specially organized ceremony. The senbazuru was created by the students as a gesture of support for Japan and the victims of the earthquake and tsunamis. Several female members of Japanese Society in Oman participated in the project to demonstrate to the students how to fold the origami crane. The senbazuru was on display at the Charity Brunch held on 27th March. H.E. and Mrs. Morimoto also received the pictures of cranes with the words of condolences and sympathies which a younger grade of students painted for the Japanese people.

      

Press conference on the establishment of a special donation account

 H.E. Seiji Morimoto, Ambassador of Japan, and Sheikh Mohammed Saud Bahwan, Chairman, Board of Directors of Oman Japan Friendship Association, and Chairman, Saud Bahwan Group, announced the establishment of a special bank account "Friends of Japan" for donations for the victims and sufferers of the earthquake and tsunamis in Japan at a joint press conference held on 19th March.

 

Half-mast flag at the Embassy of Turkey in Oman

 The national flag of Turkey flew at half-mast at the Embassy of Turkey in Oman from 18th to 21st March as the expression of sympathy for Japan upon the instruction of the Government of Turkey (See the picture on the left side. The picture on the right shows the Embassy of Japan at that time).  

    

Condolence book at the Embassy of Japan

 The book of condolences was opened at the Embassy of Japan from 13th to 23rd March. During the period, a total of 228 persons visited the Embassy to sign the book including ministers and dignitaries. Shown below are: H.E.
