4.Bilateral Relations
(1)History
Japan
formally established its diplomatic relations with the
Sultanate of Oman in 1972 after the accession of H.M. Sultan Qaboos bin Said to
the throne. However, the contact between
Japan
and
Oman
started long before the establishment of diplomatic ties.
In 1924, one Japanese geographer named
Shigetaka Shiga was granted an audience to H.M. Sultan Taimur in
Muscat
during his around-the-world trip. Interested by the story of Mr. Shiga, H.M.
Sultan Taimur eventually visited
Japan
in 1936 following his abdication and stayed in
Kobe
for years. This event let to the establishment of close ties of blood between
Al Busaidi family and
Japan
.
Japan
formally recognized
Oman
in 1971, and established its diplomatic relation with
Oman
in 1972. In October 1980,
Japan
established its diplomatic mission in
Muscat
and it was upgraded to the full-fledged Embassy in March 1983 when the first
ambassador was dispatched to
Oman
.
In November 1994, historical visit by
Their Highnesses Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako took place. The
visit became an important cornerstone for the development of friendly bilateral
relationship.
