Embassy of Japan's activities
On 17th October, Ambassador Mitsugu Saito invited H.H. Sayyid Tarik bin Shabib Al Said, Director of Renaissance Services SAOG and Tawoos LLC, to his residence, to exchange views on the friendly bilateral relations between Japan and Oman.
On 23rd October, Embassy of Japan, in collaboration with the Scientific College of Design, held a lighting design lecture by Mr. Daisuke Yano, renowned Japanese lighting designer and CEO of Tokyo Lighting Design LLC at the college. Mr. Yano gave a presentation to the students of the college about his work and the Japanese technology in the lighting design, and displayed some of his outstanding works including “Night Wave”, which lights up waves in a Japanese coast by 300m long.
On 24th October, Ambassador Mitsugu Saito hosted a reception and a lecture by Mr. Yano at his residence.
On 1st November, Ambassador Mitsugu Saito hosted at his residence “the Kobe beef tasting session” as a part of the promotion of Japan’s products to Oman. The session was held in partnership with the Middle East Fuji Khimji’s Co LLC.

The Government of Japan announced on the 3rd of November the conferment of the ‘The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold & Silver Star’ by His Majesty Emperor Akihito of Japan on H.E. Dr. Salem bin Nasser bin Said Al Ismaili, Chairman of the Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Exports Development (Ithraa). H.E. Dr. Ismaili attended the conferment ceremony on 7th of November, where he was presented the order by the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and also had an audience with H.M. Emperor.
The conferment is in recognition for his efforts in promoting economic relations and mutual understanding between Japan and the Sultanate of Oman. H.E. Dr. Salem Al Ismaili was one of the founders of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Alumni Association and its first Chairman. He also played a vital role in developing relations between Japan and Oman in the SME field.
On 15th November 2017, Ambassador Mitsugu Saito invited H.E Dr. Salem Al Ismaili to his residence and hosted a dinner to congratulate him for having been conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Government of Japan.
On 9th November, Ambassador Mitsugu Saito invited H.H Sayyid Hamed Al Said, Colonel Abdullah Al Balushi, Chairman, Oman Agriculture Company and Mr. Said Othman Al Balushi, General Secretary and CEO, Oman Football Association, to his residence and hosted a dinner to review bilateral relations between the two countries and means of enhancing them.
On 13th of November, Dr. Isam Hamza, Dean of Faculty of Foreign Language and Translation, Misr University for Science and Technology delivered a lecture in Sultan Qaboos University titled “Rebuilding a homeland – Japan after the Second World War” organized by Embassy of Japan, in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University, under the cooperation of the Japan Foundation.
After the opening remarks of Mr. Hideaki Yamamoto, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, Dr. Hamza revealed in the lecture the secret of Japan’s revival to be the second largest economic country after the Second World War, through explaining several stages: the pre-Second World War and how was Japan at that time, Japan during World War II and its damages, post-World War II and the changes that have taken place in Japan after the war.
On 28th November, Ambassador Mitsugu Saito hosted Japan’s National Day Reception at Crowne Plaza Muscat, to celebrate the 84th birthday of His Majesty Emperor of Japan. The event was attended by His Highness Sayyid Harib Bin Thuwaini Al Said as the Guest of Honour, and a large number of guests.
In the opening remarks, the Ambassador said “This year marks the 45th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relation between Japan and the Sultanate of Oman, which has witnessing continuous development over years. As an Ambassador of Japan to Oman, I am determined to continue my utmost efforts to enhance our relations in various fields.”
In the reception, Mr. Takahashi, well-known Japanese Sushi Chef cooked sushi in front of the guests. The guests enjoyed various kinds of the Japanese food such as sushi, “Kobe beef” and tempura.
H.E. Taro Kono, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan visited Muscat on 27th December 2017.
H.E. Kono made a courtesy call to H.H. Sayyid Fahad bin Mahmoud Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Council of Ministers, H.E. Gen. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Nu’amani, Minister of Royal Office and H.E. Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs. The meetings reviewed the bilateral relations of the friendly two counties, and dealt with a number of regional and international issues. Ambassador Mitsugu Saito also attended the meetings.
Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Amano, the Nobel Prize Winner in Physics (2014) for his research on blue LED, visited Muscat from 28th December 2017 to 2nd January 2018 by the support of the former Ambassador to Oman, and gave a public lecture at the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) while attending other events. On 29th December, the Ambassador Saito hosted a lecture by Prof. Dr. Amano for the students of the Japanese school for the residents in the Sultanate in the Embassy. The Ambassador Saito also invited him to the residence and had discussion on his invention.
