Greetings from Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Sultanate of Oman

Warm greetings to all of you! My name is George Hisaeda. I arrived in Muscat on 15th October 2011 to assume my post as Ambassador of Japan to the Sultanate of Oman.

Oman, located at the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, holds the Strait of Hormuz, a gateway to the Persian Gulf, and produces oil and natural gas. This makes the country an economic lifeline to Japan. It is a great honor and pleasure for me to be able to serve as Ambassador to the country of such strategic importance.

Oman has long thrived as a maritime country owing to its important location linking Asia and Africa. It is said that Sindbad, the sailor in the Arabian Nights, departed from the port town of Sohar in Oman. The people of Oman are known for their enterprising spirits, gentleness, and friendliness, and are very pro-Japanese.

Japan and Oman have enjoyed a vibrant exchange with each other not just on the economic front led by trade and investment activities but also in the field of culture. Such an exchange has deepened further especially in recent years, triggered by numbers of opportunities including commemorative events held last year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of His Majesty's accession to the throne, and Sultan Qaboos Chair that was launched in the University of Tokyo in April this year.

Next year, 2012, marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Taking the opportunity, I would like to introduce more and more people in Oman not only traditional Japanese culture but also the current state of Japan as it is and fascinating modern Japanese culture such as state-of-the-art technologies and pop cultures through various exchange activities.

Oman is a place of scenic beauty, blessed with abundant nature such as 3000-meter mountains and green highlands in addition to beautiful oceans and deserts. It is also a county with a long history and rich culture, which the people here are very proud of. I regret to say, however, that not many people in Japan know these facts. Therefore, I would like to put my efforts to widely introduce Oman to the people in Japan so that mutual understanding and friendly relations will be further promoted and strengthened.

I hope to see you soon through our embassy's activities!
